📖 On Sunday we saw how the stories of Ezekiel, Daniel and Jeremiah overlap and Matt unpacked how, in each of their stories, we see a God who is inviting us to be with Him... so that we might learn His way of life and be transformed by Him; receiving a new heart, a new Spirit and becoming more alive human beings like Jesus.

🚸 In Children’s Church we read the story of Shadrach, Meshach & Abednego in Daniel 3. We were learning that the three friends refused to bow down to the King’s golden statue, so they were thrown into a fiery furnace. But God protected them in the fire and they weren’t harmed - they didn’t even smell of smoke when they came out!

The children played parachute games, recreating the three friends going into the furnace under the parachute - but one of their friends (God) came in with them and brought them out safely. We also made pictures of ourselves in a tissue paper fire with God protecting us - and talked about the ‘fires’ in our lives that make us feel worried or sad. The story reminded us that God is with us in everything we go through.

Matt Holman came in to share a word that he had for the children, and we had a time where the children responded, prayed for each other and shared words/pictures that God gave them too.

👉 Talking points: share with your child a time in your life that felt scary and you were worried, tell them how God was with you in that situation.

Ask your child what things they are facing currently that they feel worried about, spend time praying together and ask God to show you where he is at work in that situation.

📖 On Sunday Nigel Coles (Pastor at Counterslip in the 90’s, and @webnetcomms regional team leader) visited to share with us from God’s word. Nigel took us through the theme of judgement in Ezekiel 15-17 and showed us how it all led to, and revealed, God’s true heart to see us free and living life to the full (Ezekiel 18).

🚸 In Children’s Church we read Ezekiel 17. We were learning that God sometimes talks in riddles in the bible, and that he does this so we press in deeper to find him. We had fun trying to work out some riddles together! We then acted out the riddle of the two eagles & the vine from Ezekiel 17.

The younger children played a game where they had to find hidden objects in a giant sock! We talked about the ways that we can seek God in our everyday lives. The older children talked about how, just like the Israelites in the riddle, sometimes we find that God puts us somewhere out of our comfort zone so that we can grow. Lots of things around us try to pull us away from God’s plan for us - but if we walk toward Jesus then he always promises us life and growth.

· play a game of hide & seek with your child. Talk about how Jesus ALWAYS wants to be found by us - we only have to look for him.

Explaining the vision he saw and sharing how Ezekiel’s vision led him into the calling on his life, Heidi encouraged us to draw near to God - for it is encounter with Him that encourages and empowers us to live out the call of Jesus on our lives.

We then sat and looked at ourselves in the mirror, placing post-it notes around our reflection of some of the cultural influences in our lives - but we also thought about how spending more time with God reduces those influences and shapes us to be more like him.

👉 Talking points: ask your child what things they feel influence them in the culture/world around them today - and what kind of impact that has on their lives.

Discuss what one thing your child would like to do this week to try to spend more time with God, and put a plan in place to encourage them in this.

Have you seen our For Sale sign?

If you’re part of our community, you may have passed the church building on Wells Road and might be wondering why on earth we would be selling our building! We’ve had a few questions about this recently, so here are some answers for you...

⛪️ Has the church closed down?
Absolutely not! As a church (the people, our family) we are meeting at Oasis Academy John Williams every Sunday morning - that’s just down the road. You’re welcome to join us any time!

⛪️ If you have a building why aren’t you using it?
We’ve been on a journey over the past few years with God where we have heard Him tell us to leave our building. You can find out more about this in our video from December 2023 (on YouTube or get in touch for a link) that fills in a little of the journey up until this point. In short, we want to do what we believe God is asking us to do, together, and in our community - so we’ve heard, prayed, discussed and voted and here we are! You’ll also know if you’ve visited us (especially during winter) that the building isn’t fit for purpose any more, and even when it’s full it can still be very cold. The area that we used for Children’s groups on a Sunday morning had absolutely no heating at the end of last year, which was one of the factors that helped us decide when to move out of the building.

⛪️ Who’s going to buy it?
We don’t know yet, but it isn’t a free-for-all. The members of the church will have some say over who purchases the building and the land (after a tender process) and we are trusting God to guide us to make wise decisions about that.

⛪️ What about the Foodbank?
The @sebfoodbank outlet will be moving into Christ Church Hengrove and there won’t be any interruptions to this important service ❤️

📖 God gave Jeremiah words about water, about the lack of water in the lives of the people of Judah at that time. On Sunday Matt shared about how water in the bible is symbolic of the Spirit of God, and how the Spirit helps us to cling to God and to shape our lives around Him discovering His goodness in our lives. But so often we look to other sources of water that ultimately do not provide. God calls us again and again to come to Him the Living Water. All we need to do is ask the Father who willing gives us His Spirit.

🚸 In Children’s Church we read Jeremiah 18! We were learning that Jeremiah told the people that God shapes our lives, just like a potter shapes his clay. If we open our hearts and allow God in, we can trust him to shape us into something beautiful in his hands. The children used air-dry clay to shape their own creations. But first we asked Jesus - our potter, to show us something that reminds Him of something about us that we can make. The children then made what they felt Jesus had shown them, as a reminder that God knows everything about us - and we can trust Him to shape our lives.

👉 Talking points: ask your child what they made out of clay, and why they felt that Jesus led them to make that.

Share with your child a time when you felt God’s hand upon your life - shaping you and changing you. Pray together that you will continue to be open to God’s hand upon your lives today and into the future.

In contrast to this, we looked at God’s promise to raise up a righteous remnant of ordinary people that would ultimately bring forth His Kingdom. We rejoice again that we have a God who speaks life into our mess and cares enough to bring about redemption.

🚸 In Children’s Church we read Zephaniah! We were learning that Zephaniah was speaking to the Israelites who had turned away from God - he brought a warning for them to turn their hearts back to God. We talked about how it’s easy for our hearts to turn away from God - but that God is always calling us back, and He even sings over us.

The children played a relay game with some large hearts - they had to cross out the negative words and replace them with words that bring life, just as God does with us. We then asked God to reveal to us the song that he is singing over us - it was amazing that each child’s song was so different, because God knows us all so well.

Youth Church then joined us for a time of communion and worship - where we wrote our names inside a big heart, to symbolise us re-aligning our hearts with God’s.

So Habakkuk questioned God’s plan, but then he positioned himself as if on a watchtower - waiting for God’s response. So God answered him, and revealed His plans to Habakkuk.

The older children read the verses from Habakkuk together. We felt that we should be more like Habakkuk - instead of getting frustrated about the world around us, we should talk to God - and expect him to speak to us. We spent time listening to God for ourselves - and God spoke into the children’s lives in amazing ways! The younger children built their own watchtowers out of paper cups! They also spent time talking about how we can listen to God more in our own lives.

We had a powerful time of ministry together, where the children laid hands on and prayed for each other - we also shared anything that we felt God was saying for our friends, and the Spirit really moved and spoke specifically into many children’s situations through each other.

👉 Talking points: Share with your child a time when you have waited on God - how did he answer you?
Ask your child what they are worried about in our world today - pray together and ask God to reveal some of his plans to you about that topic, and to bring you both peace.

Matt unpacked why Jesus came to be this guy that Isaiah talks about, and we saw that He came to be this guy because He loves us, and we need Him to be that guy, so that we can find life, hope, peace and joy again, which is His heart for us.

Our team is made up of differential paid and volunteer roles of pastors, elders, deacons, administrators and team/ministry leaders. We all serve our church family to live out our vision: being with Jesus, learning from Jesus and becoming like Jesus ⛪️

📖 On Sunday, Matt shared from our weekly readings (Isaiah 45-52 and 2 Kings 19). We saw how when you read the prophesies of Isaiah in the context of the dates in which they were written you discover that God spoke of things hundreds of years before they happened, and then history reveals that what God said was right. When we read the bible chronologically we discover that there is even more weight and power to Gods word that brings us even more life, hope, joy and strength.

📖 On Sunday, Matt Holman reflected on our “bible in two years” readings from Isaiah 34-44 and drew out that in the prophecies about Jesus, we find a God who calls us to Himself and breaks down the barriers that stop us from experiencing Him and the life He longs to give us.

🚸 In Children’s Church we read Isaiah 40. We were learning that the people of Israel were not obeying God, and were doing things their own way. Isaiah brought a warning to the people - but he also brought them hope. He prophesied that a new hope, Jesus, was coming to save us all. This is still so important for us today - because of what Jesus has done, we always have hope and the promise that he is with us.

The older children read Isaiah 40:26-31 together and discussed what God was saying to them through the verses. We focused on the hope that we have, and that God lifts us up on wings like eagles.

The younger children talked about what hope means, and they decorated their own eagles with our memory verse on - as a reminder of the hope and promises of Jesus.

On Sunday, Dennis showed us the story of the enemy (Satan). We see in the bible that the enemy has been at work in our world through powers like Babylon and Tyre in Old Testament times, and still is today. But we also see that the God of the bible has something to say to powers who would seek to destroy his good creation and rob those He loves of peace, hope and joy. Ultimately that message is “your day has come” and we through Jesus can know victory over that enemy. Our children and young people enjoyed a silent disco Christmas party!

This Sunday (22nd) there is no morning gathering but we are very excited to get together for our Christmas Carol Service at 7pm! Everyone is welcome and we're looking forward to seeing you for carols and mince pies at Oasis Academy John Williams 🎄

This week we got interrupted by a fire alarm and so Matt brought us a shorter talk, off the cuff, from a different passage than planned. But maybe this was God’s heart for us this week, to tell us that He is the one who takes dead things and brings them to life... if only we’d throw it all on Him ✝️

📖 On Sunday we met together at our new venue, Oasis Academy John Williams, for the first time! As we stepped out into the call of God to leave our building we looked at how it is possible to stand in the promise of God but live in the past. We saw how Israel and their kings physically stood in God’s promise but kept going back to live in the ways of the past, the ways of Egypt, the ways of slavery. And Matt challenged us not to go back, corporately but also in our personal lives, and instead to live fully in the promises of God for now.

🚸 In Children’s Church we read the story of how God provided for Elijah from 1 Kings 17. We were learning that God provided for Elijah in unexpected ways. We talked about the things God provides in our own lives - and that we are learning to trust God, even if he answers us in ways that surprise us sometimes! We thought about the journey we have been on as a church - and even being in a new place today is proof of God’s provision for us as a church family.

The children used paper plates to write/draw the things in their life that are asking God to provide for. We used the plates as a prayer point to ask God to provide for us, and to tell him that we trust His ways.

👉 Talking points: share a story with your child about a time that you have known God’s provision in your life.

Discuss with your child the provision that you are trusting God for in your family, and pray together about this.
